The Indignities of Poverty, Compounded by the Requirement to Prove It

I wish everyone in Capitol Hill could get a copy of this but I fear even then they would choose to remain clueless.

  1. Lindi, thanks for sharing this. I have been blessed to work with an organization that helped homeless families who were working find their way back to self-sufficiency. When I spoke to various church, synagogue and business groups to raise awareness, volunteers and funding, invariably many in the audience were surprised these folks had jobs and were homeless.

We used to require our volunteers to sign a statement not to proselytize to the families What we found is this was not needed, as these folks tended to be very pious in times when you might think they would question the higher being. The volunteers learned more about faith working with these folks than they ever could in a church.

At the end of the day, we helped these people climb the ladder out of homelessness. But, they had to climb it. One of our social workers said she walks side-by-side with the families. I liked her phrasing.
